无人可以否认Garth Brooks变革了当今乡村音乐的面貌这一事实。一些人认为他通过“更新换代”使得乡村音乐更符合那些Top 40热门电台听众的口味，而很多音乐纯粹主义者则指责他只是用迎合音乐消费者最低级的大众口味而让乡村音乐不再纯粹。不管怎么说，Brooks都在新传统主义乡村乐理念的伪装下，创作出了浮华的新乡村乐和诱人的乡村流行乐。他1991年的《Ropin' The Wind》是第一张在流行音乐榜上首周即登上冠军宝座的作品——这正是在他的《No Fences》专辑狂卖1300万张的一年之后。

无论纯乡村乐主义者们怎么否认，Garth Brooks都是乡村音乐历史上的关键人物。他商业化地融合了后Merle Haggard时代的乡村乐、酒吧音乐、以及他敏锐的后民谣/摇滚乐的创作灵感，再藉以70年代大体育场摇滚演出的花招效果，Brooks把乡村音乐介绍给了90年代的一批新听众——也就是说，更大规模的听众。

在Brooks之前，一个乡村音乐艺人的唱片能卖出多白金销量几乎是难以置信的，但他却在1991年打破了这个障碍：当他的第二张专辑《No Fences》发行后，随即便统治了排行榜，它的后续之作《Ropin' the Wind》则成为有史以来第一张首周发行便勇夺流行音乐榜冠军宝座的乡村专辑；而《No Fences》最终也在美国卖出了1300万张之巨。在Garth之后，乡村音乐开始成功的在流行榜上保有了一个不变的地位。在这个过程中，乡村音乐失却了很多原汁原味的传统，但这也正是为什么Brooks如此重要的原因。

Garth Brooks是Troyal和Colleen Carroll Brooks夫妇的儿子，出生于1962年2月7日。他的母亲Colleen本身也就是一名乡村歌手，在上世纪50年代中期为Capitol公司录制了为数不多的作品，但却从来没有在榜上获得成功。当还是孩提时，Garth就对音乐十分着迷，并常常在家庭聚会上演唱，但是，当时他还是更专心致志在体育运动上。他还作为一个标枪投掷运动员而获得了俄克拉荷马州大学的奖学金，但他最终在大学生涯里放弃了体育。当他还在大学时，Brooks就开始在俄克拉荷马当地的一些俱乐部里演唱，为他伴奏的主音吉他手则是Ty England。

当他拿着一份广告专业的文凭于1984年12月毕业后，Garth Brooks决定去做一名乡村音乐歌手。1985年他来到乡村音乐圣地纳什维尔，希望被一家唱片公司发掘。可就在到达纳什维尔的23小时后，他回到了俄克拉荷马，并对这个音乐行业、他的未来、以及他天真的梦想，感到失望。Brooks此后继续在俄克拉荷马的俱乐部里表演，在1986年，他与大学女友Sandy Mahl结婚。

Garth Brooks的首张专辑里还诞生了三首金曲——冠军单曲“If Tomorrow Never Comes”、“The Dance”和亚军单曲“Not Counting You”。但是，他的第二张专辑《No Fences》才让他成为了超级巨星。

《No Fences》发行于1990年秋季，预发单曲是获得超级成功的“Friends in Low Places”。《No Fences》在乡村音乐榜的冠军宝座上呆了23周，在发行后的十天内就卖出了70万张。从1990年到1991年间，Brooks的这张专辑里产生了一系列的乡村冠军单曲，包括“Unanswered Prayers”、“Two of a Kind, Workin' on a Full House,”和“The Thunder Rolls”。到1993年，《No Fences》的销量已过千万。

不仅他的唱片销量打破了所有的乡村音乐记录，Garth Brooks的演唱会也打破了所有惯例。1990年底，他可以在数分钟内卖掉一个体育场的票，而且利用着70年代的摇滚舞台艺术来给自己的演唱会增彩。Brooks使用无线的耳机话筒来进行演唱，这样他就可以在他宽大的舞台上四处跑动。他的演出现场，有精致的灯光效果、烟火爆破，甚至还有可以让他爬到观众头上向他们打招呼并进行歌唱的的绳具。他是第一个应用这样的摇滚音乐会噱头和技术的乡村艺人。

在感觉到他有失去他忠实听众的危险后，Brooks在1993年带着直率的乡村音乐专辑《In Pieces》回归了，尽管没有获得《No Fences》和《Ropin' the Wind》那样的超级成功，但这张专辑还是获得了极高的赞誉，并卖出了几百万张。即便如此，他依然是流行音乐史上最成功的艺人之一，也是为数不多的几个能保证每张新专辑都能卖出几百万张，每场演唱会都能销售一空的艺人之一。

只发行了一年就没再版的精选辑《The Hits》于1994年秋季发行，并最终卖出了800万张。1995年11月，Brooks事隔两年终于发行了又一张全新专辑《Fresh Horses》，在发行后的仅6个月，它卖出了300万张以上。但尽管取得了开门红，而且《Fresh Horses》在榜上爬升很快，迅速取得了四白金的销量（对任何艺人都是一个健康的数字），但比较于Brooks超级巨星的身份来说，还是有些让人失望。于是Brooks决定不遗余力地推销他的第七张专辑，专辑名也恰如其分地冠名为《Sevens》（七）。该专辑原本计划于1997年8月发行，那时他正好可以在纽约中央公园的超大规模演唱会上进行宣传。但是当Capitol唱片公司经历了一场管理层地震后，计划搁浅了，许多Brooks在唱片公司内的高层支持者被打进了冷宫。于是，由于对新管理层的忧虑，Brooks延迟了《Sevens》的发行，直到公司承诺将竭尽全力发行推销这张专辑为止。之后他在中央公园进行了表演，获得了媒体广泛的报道。藉以演唱会之力，Capitol公司终于勉强同意了Brooks的要求，于是《Sevens》也在1997年11月予以了发行。该专辑一出便登上了冠军宝座，并很快在假日档期拿到了多白金销量。

翌年春，Brooks使他的前六张专辑都绝版无售后，重新发行了一套限量版专辑。这个套撞合辑囊括了那所有六张专辑并附加有新曲。当所有这两百万套限量版专辑都卖完了后，那六张单独的专辑却依然处于绝版状态，直到它们的发行十周年纪念日，而且还只以DVD音频形式发行。1998年末发行的《The Double Live》现场专辑的销售依然凌厉，但并没有如计划中的那样火爆。1998年春，Brooks还试图参加圣地亚哥的“牧师”棒球队，显然他想要在乡村音乐以外的领域一展身手。

但在他清楚他的未来不可能是去做一名职业棒球运动员后，他又开始为电影着迷，并在描述一部关于一个摇滚明星Chris Gaines故事的惊悚片《The Lamb》里担任角色。为了获得这个角色，他花了大量的工夫。

1999年春季，这个电影开了绿灯，让Babyface担任制作，而Brooks担任主演。在前期制作中，为了成其为Chris Gaines，Brooks竭尽全力，甚至虚构生平故事和音乐历史来填补故事的空白。他甚至还以Chris Gaines的身份录制了13首歌曲，以补全那虚构的故事。

就在这张所谓的“Chris Gaines”专辑即将发行之际，Brooks在片中的新形象却被公之于众。他看上去消瘦而错乱，成为了一个乱蓬着头发的灵魂歌手。这对所有的观察家来说都是非常非常怪异的。之后，便展开了一场大型的为Chris Gaines塑造光辉形象的公关行动，包括一部电视特辑，但细节复杂，解释不清。

1999年9月《In the Life of Chris Gaines》专辑发行，尽管入榜即夺得亚军宝座，但依然是一个巨大的商业失败，很多唱片店都纷纷对其打大折出售，希望能卖掉积货。音乐迷对“Gaines项目”的困惑也伤害到了Brooks第二张圣诞专辑《Garth Brooks与圣诞魔力》的销售。

Brooks在2000年的大多数时间里都保持低调，而市场证明，“Chris Gaines”的专辑对电影《The Lamb》也造成了毁灭性打击。Brooks之后宣布，他意图在下一张专辑推出后退休。2001年11月，《Scarecrow》专辑发行，再度迅速登上排行榜首位，卖出了三百万张。
